Hey readers,
While I try not to focus too much on "the author", this segment is just for you. I do encourage "the reader" to join us on this journey though as you may be able to bring some of these aspects into your own workplace and further your career in whatever your daily duty may be.
Over the next few months, Promotion will be the name of the game. Publishing houses don't expect you to promote yourself just because of cost, but because, as I've said time and time again, readers grasp onto the author long before they will ever take hold to the publisher as a baby koala would to it's mother.
Why the sudden determination to talk about promotion? Well, I was just in my first guest blog appearance at Triple R (thanks Tiffany) talking about Variance which progressed into a small statement on promoting one's self. That turned into a fairly lively discussion getting some great input from those readers and made me think about this new segment. If you didn't see it, I hope you take the time to head over, read up and join the discussion if you have some input to share. So far we are up to 20+ comments which is great and humbling.
Some keywords from posts you will see include:
Community. Social. Unique. Persistence. Branding.
Some of this may make perfect sense to you already and may know where I'm heading. Others may look at this and proceed to the quintessential 'puzzled dog' look. In either sense, I hope to see a lot of great discussion each week. Remember, the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked, so if you are confused or are looking for guidance be sure to speak up. For those of you who are veterans to the concept of Promotion, I encourage and challenge you to speak up to assist those who need ideas. I don't expect the giving away of "trade secrets" by any stretch of the imagination, but a "this helped me when I started" or "I see a great Return-On-Investment from..." would be so very helpful to those honing their craft.
With that said, I will be starting this later in the week. I look forward to having you join me!

I look forward to these discussions - I always learn something. In my experience, nothing beats meeting people in person at book signings or trade shows. People are more prone to buy a book from an author they know or have met in person. Social networking is a good start, but you have to take it one step further.
