Musical Impact

Hey folks,

Just a fun post today, I'm looking for what music you listen to when you write... or even when you read? What sets the mood for you? Movie scores? Classical? Metal? Let's hear what your favs have been!

Me:
Batman Begins and The Dark Knight soundtracks (hope the third is as good as the first two)

I definitely listen to music when I write, or more often, when I'm thinking about what I'm writing, working out plot details, etc. And I NEVER know what that music will be, as it is often music I would ordinarily never listen to. With my latest book (supernatural thriller) I listened over and over to "Christine" by the punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees, along with the first track on the LOTR Two Towers soundtrack. Go figure. I once wrote a play inspired by endless, ENDLESS repetitions of Bob Marley's "Concrete Jungle", often played so loud my downstairs neighbors banged on the ceiling with a broom.

OOH, that's another one... or three, LOTR soundtracks!

But that's funny about the banging on the ceiling - rebel.

Mozart symphonies and sonatas, Beethoven symphonies and sonatas, Bach, Ron McFarlane's Renaissance Lute. Can't listen to any rock or anything with lyrics - too distracting.

Yup, big fan of Mozart and Beethoven. Hans Zimmer (Batman, amongst others) has some great stuff and worth checking out - no lyrics.

I just put my Itunes on a shuffle of my favorite 100-200 songs. A lot of classic rock, a decent amount of harder kind of blues, plus a bit of country and folk to round it out.

That's unique, Ed, I don't hear of a lot of people listening to music with lyrics while writing. Very cool though to get the minor population!

I must listen to music when I write to drown out all the noises around me. Depending on what I'm writing, the choices are limitless. Horror = Metallica/Nirvana, Romance = 70s 80s Soft Rock. But I find myself always at my peak when listening to The Last Samurai Soundtrack. I can't get enough of it.
